Purple lotus tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large purple lotus flower with layered petals and a pink-orange centre fills the frame, sitting on the outer thigh of a person wearing dark shorts. The petals use soft gradient shading in deep violet, magenta and blue, with fine vein-like lines along the edges for dimension. The tattoo is shown in close, slightly angled view against a plain light background.

The onions were already weeping when Mr Akers came down the companionway with the crate, and I knew from the way he held it, level, like a man carrying a sleeping child, that it was not more tinned peaches.

Inside, wrapped in wet sacking, was a lotus bulb as big as my fist, pale and knobbled, with three shoots already pushing out of it like green fingers. Some stowaway from a rice port near Chittagong, he said, though nobody aboard the Maud Garrow had been to Chittagong except in the tally books. He wanted it in the galley because the galley had the only steady warmth on the ship, and because, he said, I was the only cook who wouldn't drown it out of spite.

I put it in a bucket of brackish water by the range and forgot about it for a week, which is how cooks keep most things alive. When I looked again the shoots had opened into leaves as wide as saucers, and the water had gone green with what I told the mate was algae and what I privately suspected was the bulb's own opinion of us.

Then came the Biscay gale. Three days the galley stood on its end, pans went over, a cask of lard burst, and the bucket skated across the deck and cracked against the bulkhead. I found the bulb whole in the wreck, and it had flowered in the night: one bloom the colour of a bruised plum, held up above the spilt flour like a lamp somebody had forgotten to put out. I stood there with a ladle in my hand and nothing to cook.
