Hogwarts house crest on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large Hogwarts house crest fills the forearm, with a red and gold lion, a green serpent, a yellow badger and a blue eagle in the four quarters around a central H. A pale ribbon above reads DRACO and a second ribbon below carries a Latin motto. Bold black outlines define the shield and animals, with flat, saturated colour and light shading across the design.

Dear Mam and Dad, the post goes out at six so I'm writing now, while the boiler in the corridor still ticks. You'll be pleased to hear the crest is sewn on straight at last, though the badger still looks like it has swallowed a wasp. They sorted us into houses on Tuesday in the great hall under the beams, each of us called up to stand on a worn square of oak while Mr Gorst read names from his ledger.

I was put in Blackhurst, the green one with the serpent, which the older boys say is full of sly ones. Kit Anders from Shildon went to the lions, and he's already telling everyone his grandad was a lion too, so take that with salt. Nobody has asked where we're from yet, which is a relief. The banner on my arm says my name in gold thread the matron does for nothing, and the motto underneath is a Latin thing nobody can pronounce. I've been told it means never giving up, which seems a lot to ask of a boy who can't climb the rope.

Mam, the wages you sent are in the envelope under the wardrobe. Don't open it, I've already put half in the Post Office book. I've been asked to carry coal up for the kitchen on Saturdays, which pays a shilling, so I'm not complaining. Tell Dad the eagle house beat us at football by three goals and their captain has a bandage on his knee just like the one Dad wore after the fall.

When the shift bell goes at the pit, I can hear it from the top field, a long low note across the moor. I count the strokes the way you taught me. This week I got lost after twelve every time. Tell Grandad I'll look for the badger next holiday. Love, Tom
