Dagger, rose and Geronimo banner on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A dagger with a glowing green and yellow halo runs diagonally through a red rose with green leaves, and a blue ribbon banner across the centre reads GERONIMO. Black rays radiate behind the dagger, and a bird or swallow shape sits at the lower edge. The design uses bold black outlines with flat, saturated red, green, blue and yellow fills, photographed on an upper arm against a plain pale green wall.

Nell had the ovens lit by half past three, the way her grandmother had, and the shop still smelled of yesterday's rye when she reached for the lame. It hung on its hook by the proving cupboard, a short steel blade with a wooden handle worn pale where a thumb had rested for sixty years. She held it under the bulb until the metal caught the light and threw a green shine across the tiles.

Above the back door, in her brother's wobbly capitals, the word GERONIMO still ran across a strip of tin. Sam had shouted it off the quarry ledge every summer until the council fenced it, then come up from the flooded pit laughing with weed on his shoulders. Their mother had planted the rose by the yard wall the year he was born, and it had grown over the bins ever since, red as a warning light, its petals dropping onto the flags like loose change.
She began on the first tray of boules, pressing the blade in at an angle and drawing it through in one clean stroke, so each loaf split open into a curl of crust. Her hands knew the rhythm. Halfway down the row the back door rattled and a swallow shot in from the dark, looped twice over the cooling racks and slipped out through the gap again, as if it had only come to check the bread was ready.
Nell didn't chase it. She finished the tray, slid the loaves onto the rack and wiped the lame clean on her apron. Outside, the sky over the pike had gone the colour of weak tea. She picked up the chalk and wrote the date on the slate by the till, then, after a moment, added a small dot beside it, which was how Sam had signed everything he ever jumped from.
