The keyhole was the only part of the medallion that looked new, so Inspector Dora Venn kept her thumb over it while the lorry driver argued in the lane behind her. Gone eleven at Harwick Crossing, rain sheeting off the canopy, and the man swore he carried nothing but his late father's effects and a box of cheap cigarillos.

She had seen a hundred of these: pewter discs sold to pilgrims and weekend mystics, crowned stags sprouting antlers, promises that the faithful would outlive their debts. This one's eye had been painted rather than printed, and someone had taken real care over the hatching. Under her lamp the small red word on the rim stood out against the grey, as if the maker wanted her to read it twice.

"Believers never die," she read aloud. The driver gave a short laugh. "That's what the man in Ostend told me. Said it was lucky." Dora weighed the disc in her palm, felt the raised beads of its border press into her skin, and thought about how many people had been told that very sentence by someone who knew better.

She waved him towards the barrier, then sealed the medallion in an evidence bag and wrote the vendor's name beneath the red word. Through the wet glass the eye in the keyhole stayed open, watching the car park fill with rain.
