The gritter's wipers could not keep up with the snow, so Dilys Marr leaned forward until her forehead almost touched the glass. Below the cutting, the hazard lights of the stranded coach blinked through the flakes like a dropped string of beads. Someone inside had pressed the horn twice, then stopped, as if embarrassed to be heard.

The depot radio had given her the last of the pass numbers an hour before midnight. Nobody said the year out loud on the channel, but the dispatcher had chalked MMXVI above the kettle that morning and nobody had rubbed it off. She dropped the blade and fed the spreader, and the grit hissed out over the black ice in a fan that caught the headlights and made them glitter.

At the summit the coach driver, a young man with a rolled timetable stuffed into his coat, climbed down and waved both arms like a windmill. Behind him the passengers were singing, something ragged about auld lang syne with most of the words wrong. Dilys wound the window down two inches. 'Happy new year,' he shouted, and she shouted back that it had better be, because she was not doing this twice.

When the coach crept past her tail lights at ten past one, the sky had cleared. Five stars hung above the ridge in a loose scatter, bright enough to read by. She switched off the cab light so the glass held nothing but them, and sat a while longer with the engine ticking, letting the good weather arrive without her.
