Gold metallic temporary tattoo sheets

Botanical · Colour · Flash

Several sheets of gold metallic temporary tattoo designs are shown, some slipped out of a blush pink envelope with a button fastening. The designs are narrow decorative bands with fine vines, leaves, ferns, dotted borders and comb-like stripes, all in a flat metallic gold. The sheets are laid across a pale grey surface, with the cream backing and pink envelope creating a soft, neutral composition.

The envelope came through the Dover mail hall on a Tuesday, declared as stationery samples with no commercial value, which is how I knew it had value. I slit it open with the blade I keep for parcels, and the sheets slid out the way a fan opens: gold on cream, bands of fern and vine, dotted borders, stripes as fine as a comb's teeth.

Our rule is that anything meant for skin gets a second look, because unlicensed dressings can burn worse than a carton of cigarettes. I held a strip up to the strip light and the metallic threw the glare back at me. Nana Eileen used to press glitter transfers onto my wrists every Christmas in Whitstable, licking her thumb and counting to ten while the paper stuck. I hadn't thought about that in years until the gold caught my eye.

I wrote the form up as released. Then, in the break room with the door shut, I peeled one band free, the comb stripes on the backing and the fern trailing beneath them. I pressed it to the inside of my left wrist and rubbed with a damp paper towel, counting to ten under my breath.

On the bus home the gold was still there, dull at the edges, a ladder of lines climbing toward my elbow. I pulled my sleeve down over it and kept my hand in my lap all the way past the roundabout.
