Stacked flash sheets of metallic gold, silver and black temporary tattoo designs with triangles, diamond lattices, an arrow, a pineapple and a heart.

Gold and black geometric temporary tattoo sheets

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

Several overlapping sheets show temporary tattoo designs in metallic gold, silver and black ink on white paper. The gold sheet includes a diamond lattice, hexagon motifs, a mandala-style flower, an arrow, a pineapple, a heart, a teardrop and the word Swallow. The black and silver sheets carry repeating triangle and zigzag bands with fine stepped detail, and the linework is crisp and evenly spaced.

You lean your hip against the oven door at ten to five, the way you always have to in February, and slide the tray of rolls in while it groans. Flour on the scale, salt in your palm, the dough already warm from the bench. Your hands are awake before the rest of you. Through the shop window the streetlamp on Cutler Street is the only thing lit, and it buzzes like a fly trapped in a jar.

Dev left a sheet of gold transfers behind last week, a leftover from his niece's birthday, and you have been peeling them off their backing between batches. A diamond lattice runs down the side of each cake box lid, with hexagons tucked into the corners. You saved the pineapple for the Hendersons' anniversary loaf, because Mrs Henderson once said pineapple made her feel like she was on holiday in a way nothing else did. The word Swallow sits on the cooling rack where you stuck it, the name of the café two doors down that shut in October and left its sign leaning against the bins.

At six the bell over the door goes and Mrs Okonedo stands there with rain on her shoulders, asking for her usual rye. She sees the lids stacked by the till and stops. Her son flies out to Lagos this morning, she says, and she wants a box with the arrow on it, so he knows which way home is. You don't tell her the arrow was meant for nothing in particular. You find the little gold arrow on the sheet, press it down with your thumb, and smooth it flat.

She carries the box out into the grey light. Through the glass the foil catches the lamp one last time before the sun does, and for a moment the whole lattice looks lit from underneath.
