Hooded figure among trees on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated figure with its head bowed and hands covering the face is the central subject, set against a dense backdrop of dark, bare trees. The shading is smooth and realistic, with deep blacks fading into soft greys across the body and background, and thin dripping lines run down from the figure's legs. The tattoo wraps the length of the forearm, with the figure centred and the trees rising on either side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My grandmother said the wood above Hollin Mere was planted by a widow who would not stop crying. She sat at the water's edge with her skirts in the mud and her hands pressed over her eyes. The rain that fell on her ran down her shins and left black lines in the peat, and wherever the lines went, alders came up grey and bare.

The village kept well away from her. Men who went near came back quiet, and a ploughman who laughed at her went blind before harvest. Nobody knew her name. The children dared each other to count the trees, but the number changed every time, because the wood was always making room for one more.

The year the miller's boy went missing, his mother walked out to the mere alone with a loaf and a tallow candle. She found the widow still sitting there, hands over her face. Nobody has ever agreed on what was said between them. The mother came back at first light with wet hair and the boy asleep on her shoulder, and she never once looked up at the branches again.

Grandmother always finished the same way. If you ever sit in that wood and hear someone weeping overhead, take your own hands from your face and look up. The widow will be looking back at you, and the trees will lower their arms.
