Pine forest sleeve on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows tall, thin pine trees standing close together, with their branches and needles rendered in fine dark linework and soft shading. The trees fade into a pale, hazy background toward the middle, giving a sense of depth and fog. At the lower edge, the forest dissolves into dense dotwork stippling, and the image is entirely black and grey.

The tally had been right at dawn, and by the time the mist lifted off Glen Tarran it was wrong again. I counted from the stile with my pencil behind my ear and my boots soaked to the ankle, two hundred and eleven stems standing close as mourners, their tops lost in the grey.

Old Mr Lachlan had warned me at the inn. Pines in this glen don't stop where the map says they stop. He said the ones furthest in go pale first, then thin out into fog, and you can walk among them for an hour before you notice the path has gone soft underfoot, pocked with small dark marks like rain that never falls. I laughed at him, which I now regret, because I had a ledger to fill and a timber company in Inverness waiting on my figures.
At noon I reached the place where the ground turned to speckle. Every step pressed up a fine black dust that clung to my trousers, and the trunks ahead went grey, then went altogether. I wrote two hundred and eleven in the ledger, crossed it out, wrote two hundred and twelve, and the pencil stopped of its own accord over a tree I could not see.
I took the ledger back to the inn that night and left the column blank. The company still pays me by the acre, but I have never sent them the final figure. When I walk past the sawmill now I can smell the resin on the wind, and I think of that last trunk standing out in the haze, counted only by someone who stopped long enough to look.
