The village tried to pull it. Old Ada Quarles took her hoe to it twice, and twice it was back by morning, red as a fresh cut, its petals opening wider every time she swore at it. Then the winter came hard, the kind that splits the water butts, and the children stopped going past the lich gate. Only the frost on the window glass showed any words at all. Hope, someone breathed into the pane. Then love. Then resilience, which none of the children could spell, so they drew it in the mud with a stick and the rain took it.

Ada went out in the thaw with a candle and sat down beside the lily, and she told it everything she had never said at the funeral. The heart she had kept folded in her apron for forty years came out of her pocket, and she pressed it against the stalk. That was all it took. By Lady Day the lily had gone to seed, and the seeds had carried, so every hedge bottom from here to the mill was flaring red. The whole village came out with their candles that year, and Ada, who had never once in her life been looked at kindly, found she didn't mind being looked at at all.
