Orange rose with green leaves on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large rose in bloom sits at the centre of the image, with a tight bud visible inside the open petals and green leaves curling up to the right. Thick black outlines define the petals, with soft orange, red and yellow shading blended within them. Partial foliage and another flower design appear at the left edge, and the skin around the tattoo is plain and lightly lit.

Dear Ruth, the rose you sent in the tin came through the crossing still in its paper, though the stem had gone soft and the petals were the colour of a boiled sweet. I have pressed the bud into my Bible under Ezekiel, where nobody will look. Mr Pellow says I am soft on flowers for a man who has spent eleven winters watching the sea try to climb our tower.

Out here nothing grows but lichen and a scatter of sea thrift in the cracks by the landing. So when the supply boat brought the seedling in a hessian bag, I nursed it on the gallery rail, where the salt could reach it and the lamp could warm it at night. It sulked for a month. Then one morning in October it opened a single orange bloom the size of my fist, with a tight bud curled in its centre like a secret it had not yet decided to tell.
Ruth, I know you think I should come home. Maybe after the equinox. The relief boat is late again, and the glass has been falling since Tuesday, so I am writing this by the lamp with the wick trimmed low. Last night the swell broke over the lower rock and the spray reached the windows, and I stood at the rail with my hand on the stem, the petals shivering, and I was not frightened at all.
Keep the bud for me. When the boat comes I will bring the rose down in a jar, and we will see whether it survives the crossing as well as I have.
Yours ever, Tom
