Hope script with ribbon on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of black script lettering reading Hope on the inner wrist. The o is replaced by a purple awareness ribbon, and a semicolon at the end has a green ribbon sitting over its curve. The lettering is bold black linework with flat purple and green fills, shown against plain skin with a blurred patterned fabric at the edge.

Dear Maureen,

I finished the sign for the Pavilion this morning, the one you said I'd never get straight over the door. The gilt lettering on the old board had flaked to nothing, so I scraped it back to bare wood and started again in black enamel, the way Dad taught me. I had the H and the p down by dinner. Then I stopped, because the word wanted something in the middle, and I couldn't think what.

Mrs Pryce came in from the cloakroom with her purple scarf knotted over the handle of her bag and said, just paint a ribbon in for the o, Walter, the way they do on the collection tins. So I did. Fine brush, two coats, and the ribbon sits in the loop as if it was always meant to be there.

The semicolon was the hard bit. Mrs Pryce wanted a green ribbon trailing off it, and I told her a semicolon is only a stop that keeps its breath, it isn't finished. She laughed and said that's the trouble with you, you think everything's a full stop. Anyway, it's on. The green sits over the curve and catches the light from the front window, so the whole word reads as if it's still going.

Come home Sunday if you can. The sign's up, and the dance is on Saturday. Bring your bad temper and I'll find you a brush.

Love, Dad
