Hope script and purple heart on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A healed or healing photograph of a tattoo on the inner wrist, showing the word Hope in thin black script above a purple outlined heart. A small purple ribbon or bow-like motif sits inside the heart's lower left curve, with a line crossing through the heart. The linework is fine and the ink is solid purple with no visible shading, set against a blurred carpet and a dog in the background.

The ribbon came away from the rosette in Dora's fingers before she had decided to pull it. It was the last night of the Michaelmas fair at Harbury Meadow, and the wind off the flats had got under every canvas on the row. Behind her, her uncle Stan's gallopers kept turning, brass poles ticking as the painted horses rose and dipped to a waltz nobody had asked for.

Stan had been sorting prizes into a biscuit tin since Tuesday. Blue for second, red for third, and a handful of purple ones he saved for the best of the best, though nobody had won one all season. He kept them folded flat so the pleats wouldn't crease, and he had never once let Dora touch the tin. Tonight he was asleep in the caravan with his boots on, and the tin sat open on the counter, and the purple ribbon was loose in her hand.
She found Ivy Marsh at the hook-a-duck stall, her nose pressed to the rail. The girl's pony had come second at the county show that spring and had never been forgiven for it. Dora knotted the ribbon through the girl's fingers and said nothing clever about it. Ivy looked at the scrap of purple, then at the painted sign above the stall, then back at Dora.
When the lights went down, Dora walked to the caravan and tied the last of the ribbon through the door handle, where the word Stan had lettered in white paint would catch the morning. The wind took the loose end and pulled it straight out toward the marsh, as though it already knew the way.
