Black fine line script lettering tattooed on the side of the ribs, shown reversed in a mirror selfie.

Black script lettering on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A short line of black script lettering sits on the side of the torso, just below the underarm. The letters are reversed because the photo is a mirror selfie, and the word is hard to read at this resolution. The ink is dark grey-black on skin, and the subject wears a coral tank top, holds a phone with a floral case, and has red nail polish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow shut the pass on the third day of Advent, and the innkeeper's widow at Cold Harrow had three guests and a cellar full of apples. The eldest guest, a carter called Dunstan Wray, could not read, but he could copy a shape, and on the last night he asked her to write him a word he could carry home. She had only a stub of charcoal and the back of a tallow bill, so she wrote in her careful hand the name of the town he was going to, Hallam Brow, and the word for return, which she slanted the way her mother had taught her.

He folded the paper and tucked it inside his shirt. In the morning he was gone, with the snow still piled behind him, and nobody at the inn thought of it again until spring, when a letter came up from the valley in a hand nobody knew. It was addressed to the widow and written backwards, every letter turned like a face in a looking glass, so that she had to hold it to the window to make out the words. It said only that the road was open, that he had got the word home, and that she should keep the charcoal.

She kept the charcoal in a tin on the mantel for thirty years. When the new landlord cleared the room after her funeral, he found the tin empty and a scrap of paper pressed flat beneath it, with the same word written on it again, reversed, as if someone had meant it to be read from the other side of the glass.
