The goat came up the lane on the Tuesday before Martinmas, and nobody in Ashgrove Fold would meet his eyes, which was the first sensible thing the parish had managed all year. Hester Crane, who kept the mill and had no patience for bogeys, set a bowl of barley on the step for him anyway. He ate with his horned head bowed, then lifted his hands from the ruin of his face and asked for the one thing the village had never given anyone: her name, spoken aloud in daylight and freely offered. She told him she had none to spare. He folded his hands back over his eyes and his shoulders shook like a man at a graveside, and she found she could not bring herself to shut the door on that.

By Thursday the church clock had stopped at a minute no one could name, the bell-rope had knotted itself into a noose, and every child in the fold was humming the same three notes. Hester took a lantern up the tower and found the goat crouched among the bells with his hands pressed to his face. "Every name I have taken," he said through his fingers, "I have spent on counting."

She went down the tower without a word. At the mill-race she covered her own eyes with both palms and did not look until morning, and by then she had forgotten she ever had a name to give.
