Horned woman and moon on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A woman's face with horns, sharp fangs and a snake across her lips sits beneath a three-eyed horned creature and a crescent moon. Bold black outlines are filled with grey shading and yellow-orange eyes, with a skull pendant and a compass star below. The same forearm is shown in three mirrored views against a plain light background.

Mind your feet on that step, it's green as a bishop's sins. Ruadh's boy went out past the skerries the night the moon split in two, and the whole island stood on the slipway with lanterns, because nobody else had the nerve to follow him. Not one of us would row out there, not with the water running backwards under the pier.

Out beyond the rocks where the gulls won't settle, a creature sat on the stone with three yellow eyes and a ram's horns curled back like a pair of old oars. Beside it, a woman with a serpent across her mouth held a bell rope that rang nothing at all. She asked the boy what the sea was owed. He said his father's boat, that's all, just bring it home. She laughed, and the sound came up out of the water like cold ale. She drew a silver skull from round her neck and dropped it over the side, and every point of the compass on the swell swung round to face the island.
The boy rowed home by the light of that skull, which sank down through the black water and kept on shining. The boat came in behind him with his father slumped over the oars, half-drowned and quite alive. Nobody asked how. Nobody on this island ever asks the sea how it got its way. We pay what's owed and we keep our lanterns lit on the first night of the new moon.
So when you walk down to the slip after dark and see a yellow spark sitting low on the water, don't wave. Just count the three of them, and go home before the tide turns and she comes to collect her due.
