Horse head and rose on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A horse head in profile wearing an orange-brown bridle sits above a grey rose with brown-orange leaves. The horse is shaded in black and grey with smooth, bold outlines, and faint leaf sprigs curve behind its neck. The design fills the frame against a plain light background, with the rose anchoring the lower half.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the reunion in the back room of the Bell, nobody could agree on who had let the grey mare out. Dennis Rowe swore it was Miss Holloway, who taught them their letters and kept a bridle hung by the stove. Mary Cotter said it was the lads from the top road. The mare had stood in the paddock behind the schoolhouse for as long as anyone could remember, and when the last bell rang she would walk out through the gate and come back at dusk with the lane dust on her.

The old tale, told plainly by the caretaker, was that the mare had been a foal the winter the mill burned. She carried the children who could not walk home through the snow, one on her back and one held in front, and when the last of them was safe she lay down in the rose bushes by the wall and did not get up. The rose came up through her, the caretaker said, and the leaves came after, and the bridle that had been put on her for the carting was never taken off. Nobody thought that odd at the time.

Dennis went out to the paddock while the others were singing. The gate stood open. In the dirt by the wall there was a grey rose the size of a fist, its leaves the colour of toffee, and a hoof print pressed beside it, as if something had stood there only a minute before.

He came back in, bought a round, and said nothing about the rose. But when he left he pulled the gate shut behind him, and in the morning there was a bridle hanging from the Bell's back door handle, still warm from the stove.
