Horse with mandala on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A horse's head with a flowing mane and a pair of legs with hooves sits in front of a large radial mandala. The horse is drawn in fine black linework with stippled dotwork shading, and the mandala is built from layered dotted petals. The design fills the outer thigh, with a grey sweater at the top edge of the frame and a white brick wall behind.

Mother always said the Ardley mare came down from the hills the winter the lamps failed, and that she walked straight into the flour mill as if she had an appointment. Nobody in Corrie Bank could agree on her colour. Ned Pryce swore she was grey as wet slate, and his wife swore she was the red of a coal that won't go out. What everybody agreed on was the mane, which lifted off her neck as though she had been running through weather that never reached the rest of us.

The Ardley boys wanted her shot. Their father had lost two ploughing seasons to a bad hip and a worse temper, and he saw a mare that size and reckoned her hooves were worth more than her manners. So on the Sunday they went up with a rope and a lantern, and when they came back down the lantern was out and the rope was coiled over the eldest boy's shoulder, and nobody asked what had happened to the mare.
What I know is this. The next morning the frost had made a ring around the back field, a wide ring of white dots, every one of them where a hoof had touched the ground, petals laid out like a flower that had decided to bloom in a single night. Father Ardley walked out to look at it and stood there so long the milk went warm in the pail. Then he took off his cap, and he didn't put it back on until the thaw.
