Horse head in a circle on an arm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A horse head in profile sits at the centre of a circular frame, with its mane and neck drawn as loose, overlapping feather-like strokes. The linework is sketchy and varied in weight, with shading built up through hatching and dark accents. The design is entirely black and grey on pale skin, and the circle and swirling lines lead the eye around the composition.

The rain had been coming off the hills since dawn, and by the time the horse fair opened on the cobbles behind the Corn Exchange, the stalls were slick and the ropes sagged between the posts. You stand under the awning of Harker's tack shop with a cup of tea gone cold, watching a grey mare stamp at the water pooling round her hooves. Her owner, a woman in a man's oilskin, keeps saying the mare is quiet. The mare is not quiet. She is listening.

Then a drover comes through the gap by the fish stalls, leading a pale gelding whose mane is so wet it hangs in dark strands, like something combed out of ink. He is the first person all morning to look at you rather than the horses. He says his name is Tobin Vell, that the gelding was foaled in a barn that burned, and that the horse has not stood still since. You ask what he wants for him. He laughs and says that's the trouble, nobody wants a thing that won't stop moving.
You buy him anyway, for the price of the tea in your hand and a promise to take the ropes down by dusk. Walking him home through the wet, you find the mane lifts in the wind off the moor, each strand separate, feathering out as though the horse is running even while he stands still. At the crossroads he turns his head towards the sound of the river, and you wait, because waiting is the one thing the rain has taught you. Then he goes on, and you understand the market was never where you found him. It was only where he had been heading all along.
