A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Three days the snow had sealed the Drowned Hart, and the only things left to do were feed the fire and feed the guests, so Mother Agnes pulled her stool up to the hearth and cracked her knuckles. 'Hush now, the lot of you. You'll want the one about Tobias Quill and the crab that came in on the tide.'

Forty winters back, Tobias walked the saltings below Blakeney, where the mud runs on for a mile and the gulls argue over nothing. He found a horseshoe crab turned belly-up in a gully, its long tail spike pointing at the sky like a bowsprit with no ship beneath it. Every fisherman on that coast called them ugly, older than the cliffs, fit only for bait. Tobias had a bad knee and no bait, so he knelt in the wet, tipped the old thing over with a stick, and sat down to wait for the water.

His father, who ran the ferry and believed in nothing he could not haul, laughed until he coughed. But the boy kept watch through the grey afternoon, and when the tide came back he saw it lift the crab clean off the mud and carry it out past the bar, dome first, as easy as a man lifting his hat. Tobias never found another one that gave him the same feeling, though he looked every low tide until his knee gave out.

He died in that chair by this very fire, with a shell on the mantel at his elbow. Agnes keeps it still, dome up, spike toward the door. When the wind finds the gaps in the shutters, you can feel the sea in the room, so mind your cups. Now, who wants the cider?
