Black cat silhouette on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small cat silhouette sits on the outer upper arm, with stylised curled ears, a swirling tail and simple white swirl detail across the body. The cat is filled with solid black ink, and the white details are left as negative space in the skin. The image is a close, straight-on photo with the tattoo centred against plain pale skin and a dark sleeve at the edge of the frame.

The mule had already refused the wooden bridge twice when Maud decided the black cat was to blame. It sat on the parapet above the torrent, tail curled round its feet like a question mark, ears drawn up into two thin spirals as if it were listening to something under the water. Every carter who crossed the Hollin Pass that autumn swore it watched them with eyes like chips of lamp glass, and every one of them took the long way round by the frozen tarn.

Maud had kept the toll hut for thirty years and trusted nothing she could not count. So she went out at dusk with a lantern and a bowl of cold mutton and sat at the far end of the bridge until the cat came down the stones to her. 'You want paying, then,' she said. The cat looked at the mutton, then at the water, then at her. She noticed the pale swirls pressed into its flank where the fur was thin, like frost on a window, and understood that they were the bridge itself: each curl a plank, each plank a crossing somebody had made and not come back from.
She didn't say so. She counted out the coins she had put aside for her own burial, laid them on the wet planks one by one, and waited. At midnight the cat rose, stepped onto the span and walked it end to end without touching the rails. The mule followed without complaint, and the carters that week crossed in daylight, nodding at the hut as they passed.
Come spring, Maud found the coins gone and a single grey feather laid on her threshold. She never charged for the crossing again, and on still nights, if you stand on the bridge and go quiet, you can hear something purring under the water.
