A shark jaw outline with rows of serrated teeth sits on a lower limb, with the open mouth forming a rounded shape. The linework is dark and fine around the teeth, with grey shading across the inner area and the jaw edges. The image is in black and grey, with a light wall and a white surface in the background and a person in a dark graphic top at the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jaw had hung above the postern gate of Carrow Keep for eleven winters, and Hester Pell had walked beneath it every morning on the way to the salt pans without once looking up. Today she climbed the broken steps with a cold chisel tucked into her apron and the wind pulling at her hair, because the rope had gone green and the nails had rusted to crumbs, and because her father had asked her to bring the thing down before the new bailiff arrived.

Her grandfather had hauled the shark out of the bay with three boats and a borrowed winch. It was the creature that took Lord Ambrose's son off the Stacks, the story went, and the castle had claimed the catch as proof of its justice. Nobody in the village had ever liked the look of it. The upper jaw had been cured in brine and tallowed until its ring of teeth gleamed like a row of small blades, bitten into the grey sky.

When she loosened the last nail the jaw came away lighter than she expected, a hollow curve of bone with the sea showing through its open middle. She held it up against the headland and the frame fitted the view exactly: the harbour, the pans, and the cutter coming in low with her brother at the tiller, one arm raised in greeting.

Hester stood on the wall a long while with the jaw cradled against her chest. Then she set it down on the stones, left the cart at the foot of the stairs, and went back down alone. Let the bailiff come and find the gate bare. She had seen the boats through the mouth of the thing, and she was not ready to lose the window.
