Dear Thomasina, the balloon went up over the Downs this morning with the sun already red as a postbox, and I thought of you the whole time. Your grandfather would have called it showing off. He always said a hot air balloon was just a teapot that had got ideas above its station. He was wrong, of course, but I never told him so, because he would have gloated for a week.

The pilot was a man called Dennis who wore a bow tie the colour of the ribbons on our old canopy. When we lifted off the basket gave one little lurch, like a bus pulling away with you still on the pavement, and then the ground simply let go. Below us the fields went the green of a bottle, and the church spire at Ashbury stuck up like a pencil someone had forgotten to sharpen. I held onto the rim and felt more alive than I have since the hip.
Dennis kept shouting the same thing every time the burner roared, something about keeping your hands inside the basket, and at the top of the climb he turned round and said, Enjoy the ride, madam, as if it were a rule. I have decided it is one. So I am writing this at the kitchen table with the kettle going and the cuttings from the rose bed still on the floor, and I am telling you to go and do something ridiculous this month. Enjoy the ride, love. Nan.
