Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The image shows two matching hot dog designs in buns, one on each forearm, with the hands pressed together in front of the face. A darker tattoo of an unclear design is visible on one shoulder and upper arm, and the background is plain and dim.

Dilys Roper had been frying onions on the Nuneaton fair since the generator was new, and on the third wet Tuesday of October the rain got into the wiring and the whole row went dark except for her griddle. She kept it going with a camping lantern wedged against the tomato sauce and a bag of frozen buns she was too stubborn to throw away.

A boy in a torn anorak came to the hatch with a pound coin pinched between two fingers. He wanted a hot dog with everything on it, but she had only two sausages left, fat ones that had been sulking in the cool box since Thursday. She split them lengthwise, laid them in the buns with a squeeze of mustard, and told him the price had gone up to a smile. He gave her the coin anyway and went off across the mud towards a van that was selling candyfloss to nobody.
She watched him go and thought about the old story her father told, that a stall keeps its luck by never serving the same thing twice. Then she flipped the last onion, watched it catch the lantern light, and pinned a fresh sign to the awning. It said Open Late, and underneath, in smaller letters, Nobody Leaves Hungry.
