Shaded nut tattoo on the elbow

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bare arm with a single tattoo on the elbow, showing a rounded, dome-shaped object with a cup-like base. The form is built from soft grey shading with darker tones at the edges and some fine vertical lines suggesting texture. Above it on the upper arm are several short horizontal marks, and the composition is a casual phone shot with the arm angled across the frame.

The cobnuts were ready a week early, which Aunt Wyn said was the weather's way of making a fool of the calendar. Eli had the bushel basket wedged against his hip and was walking the rows of the Long Field with his head down, the way his grandfather used to, looking for nuts that had dropped clean out of their frilled green cups.

By eleven the grey squirrels had worked out that the gate was open. Wyn stood at the end of the lane with a broom and shouted at them in a voice that could have stripped paint, and they went up the hornbeams chattering as though she were the one who had taken something from them. Eli laughed until he had to sit on the wall by the water trough, and he forgot the basket for a while.

When he got up he found one more nut in the long grass, lying on its side. It was rounded and smooth, its shell the colour of wet bark, and the cup had stayed whole, cradling it the way a thumb sits in a glove. He held it up to the light coming through the leaves. He wanted to sell it at the gate with the others, but the cup had a small dark bruise on one side, and Wyn would say the early ones never keep.

Wyn took it from him, turned it twice, and slipped it into the pocket of her apron. "Sell the rest," she said. "This one's for planting." Eli stood a while longer among the hazels, listening for the squirrels and feeling the weight of the empty basket against his hip.
