Hot rod car tattoo on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A vintage hot rod with exposed engine, spoked wheels and a chrome-style grille is shown in fine, detailed shading. The car is rendered mainly in greys and black, with soft highlights on the body and bodywork. A reddish-brown wash sits behind the car, and the car fills most of the frame against a dark background.

Ines had worked the booth at Caro Ridge for eleven years and had stopped being surprised by what people tried to bring through in the boot. Tonight it was a 1936 coupe with its roof chopped low, sitting nose-first in the lane like a dog that knew it was in trouble. The man at the wheel had grease to the elbow, and a supercharger stood proud of the bonnet, its blower whistling even at idle.

'Papers,' she said. He handed them over without looking at her, his eyes on the grille instead. Its bars were polished so bright that the sodium lamps of the crossing ran along them in thin white lines. The logbook was softened at the corners. Under Vehicle Description someone had written in faded blue ink: wire wheels, flathead, built for speed not for show. The owner's name matched the man's own, and the registration had been renewed every year since 1971.

'Where's it headed?' she asked.

'Nevada. The salt flats. My father's meet.'

'He still racing?'

'He's still dead, miss. The car's not.'

She looked at the open engine, the cables neat as piano wire, the chrome bright against the black. She asked him to turn it over. The motor caught with a bark that rattled the glass of the booth, and the grille throbbed in the lamplight.

She stamped the form and handed it back. He pulled away slowly, the rear wheels spinning a little on the tarmac, and in the mirror she saw the grille catch the light one last time, its bars folding her own reflection into a dozen small pale strips before the car was gone into the dark.
