Classic VW Beetle with smoke on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A classic Volkswagen Beetle is shown front-on, angled slightly to the right, with a bumper, headlamp and spoked wheel rendered in detail. The car has bold dark outlines, soft shading and light blue paintwork with yellow and pink highlights. Purple and white smoke clouds surround the car, and the tattoo sits on the upper back.

She sat with her hands on the wheel and waited for the smoke to thin. Across the lay-by a man in a yellow coat was watching her over the rim of a flask. She knew him by his walk before she knew his face: Tom Harrow, who had promised in 1994 to sort the gearbox and had been apologising for it ever since.

He hooked the tow chain to the front bumper without a word. As the truck pulled away, Ruth looked back and saw the last of the white smoke still hanging over the verge, reluctant to leave, the way her grandfather had always done.
