You find the car in the drowned quarter, nose-down in a canal the colour of stewed tea. Rust has eaten the sills to lace, but the curve of the bonnet still runs in one unbroken line, the way the old printed pictures in the schoolhouse showed it. Mara says it isn't worth the rope. You tell her the headlight is still whole, and that is the end of the argument.

It takes three weeks to haul it onto the flats. You rebuild the fuel line from copper tubing scavenged off a pump house, cut a belt from a dead conveyor, and beat the front wheel rim back into a circle on a flat stone. While you work, the dust comes in off the dunes in long dark streaks, laid down by the wind like pencil strokes on a sketch. You sleep under a tarpaulin with the bonnet latched, so the grit can't scour paint that has long since gone.

On the night it finally turns over, the engine coughs twice and then holds steady, one lamp throwing a yellow circle across the wall of the depot. Mara climbs into the passenger seat with a flask of something hot and bitter. Nobody has driven further than the market ring in eleven years. You pull out onto the cracked road east toward the coast, where the sea is said to have pulled back far enough to show the old harbour wall.

By dawn the storm is a dark band behind you, and the car's shadow runs ahead across the salt, long and round-shouldered, as if it has decided to lead.
