Howling wolf and full moon, upper back mockup

Back · Black and grey · Flash

The top panel shows a full moon with grey shading and a black wolf silhouette howling, its body filled with scratchy hatched lines. The lower panel shows a moon and dark smoky clouds placed over a person's upper back, which appears to be a digital mockup rather than a photographed tattoo. The moon and clouds use soft greyscale shading, while the wolf is mostly solid black.

Dessie swears the dog on Crane Point was a wolf, but nobody on the Mary Jane believes him until the moon comes up over Skerry Bay, fat and grey as a bad pearl, and a long note rolls across the water from the rocks. You are hauling the last of the pots when it starts, and the whole crew goes still, hands dripping, listening.

Skipper Ailsa Corran says it's a fox with ambitions. Nobody laughs. The swell lifts the hull and drops it, and the moon lays a path across the sea straight to the stern, so bright you could read the tally sheet by it. You watch the shape on the headland lift its muzzle, black as a cut-out against the clouds that bank up behind it like smoke from a fire no one has bothered to tend.

Where would a wolf come from in Caithness? Dessie reckons a circus lorry, a crash on the A9, a man with a grudge. You reckon nothing, because the nets are full and the wind has backed to the south, and by the time you have run for the lee of the island the howling has stopped. When you dock at dawn, there are paw prints the size of your palm pressed into the wet slipway, leading up towards the chapel, and someone has chalked a moon on the wall beside its door with a wolf beneath it.

Dessie walks the prints to the gate, stops, and says nothing at all, which is the first honest thing he has said all season.
