Full moon on the inner wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A full moon is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a close view of the arm with the hand raised in a loose fist. The moon has a thin black outline and is filled with grey shading that suggests craters and surface texture. The plain white background keeps focus on the tattoo, which is in black and grey only.

Keep your hands still and stop picking at that scab, because the moon can see you from up there and she does not care for fidgeters. Look at her properly. Those grey smudges are not dirt on a window. They are the marks left by Hesper the stonecutter, who was paid in dried figs and salt fish to hammer the moon into the sky, so that the boats beyond the reef would never lose their way home again.

Hesper worked through the nights with his mallet and his bronze chisel, and every blow chipped a little silver from her face. She was smooth as an egg then, and she hated it. Each strike left a pit, and each pit ached. By the third month she was so pocked and raw that she could barely throw light across the harbour, and the fishermen cursed him for a fool. Hesper climbed his ladder one last time and asked what she wanted. She said only that he should sit with her once a month, when the whole village was asleep, and talk to her as if she were a person and not a lantern.
He agreed, of course, because that is what stonecutters do when they are tired. So every full moon, look up and you will see a faint pale shape on her far side, a man with his knees drawn up and a chisel across his lap. He is still talking to her, and she is still listening. Now lie down. The boats are all home, and the light is exactly where it should be.
