Howling wolf and horse with wings and antlers
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed black and grey drawing of a howling wolf in profile above a horse's head, with feathered wings spread on either side. Antlers and a looped branch with two hanging feathers frame the central animals. The shading is soft and realistic, with fine hair and feather detail on a plain white background.

Dear Tom, the hall at Carrick was packed on Saturday, and Mr Lennox had the fiddles tuned sharp because he'd sat on his own bow again. After the interval, Dad's grey mare Dove, who is far too old for anything but the hay cart, got out of the yard and came up the lane at a gallop. Nobody could catch her. She came through the open doors with her head high and stood in the middle of the boards, and the whole hall went quiet. Then from the hill above the tarn a wolf began to howl, long and low, and Dove lifted her head and answered it. Mr Lennox stopped mid-reel with his bow in the air.
Here is the odd part. Morag swears that wolf had been down from the high pass since the snow, and no one had seen one near the village in twenty years. When we went out, Dove walked back to the yard by herself, as calm as a Sunday, and the lane was empty except for the two feathers, which had come loose from the branch and blown down into the mud at her hooves.
I've kept one in the envelope, so mind it doesn't blow away when you open it. Write soon and tell me if the mine has any dancing in it, or if the men there are as sour as you said. Your loving sister, Nell.
