Horned skull over wolf skull design
Mixed · Flash
The design shows a horned human skull at the top, with a wolf or dog skull with bared fangs beneath it, set against a curved band. Crossed bones and two crescent shapes sit at the lower edge. The linework is fine and detailed, with stippled and hatched shading in dark navy and small gold-brown speckles on a cream background.

The bell in the chapel tower had been rung for the Harrowgate dead since before the Reverend's grandfather, and Maud Pelling still held the rope the way her mother had shown her, one hand low and one high, letting the weight lift her off her heels. The dogs knew the sound. Every farm between the moor and the quarry stopped what it was doing when the first note came down through the frost.

That winter the bell rang for no one. Maud rang it anyway, at dusk, because the wolf that had come down from the high wall had taken two lambs from the Ashby fold and left their bones in a neat heap by the gate, and the men had gone out with lanterns and come back quiet. Her brother Tam had gone out with them and not come back at all. Nobody said the word wolf in the chapel. They said the thing on the hill, the way they said the name of the Harrowgate lord who had built the wall and then walked over it to die.
On the seventh night she climbed the tower with the lantern and found the wolf waiting on the parapet, its jaw open to show the teeth, and above it, set on the cracked stone like a crown, a horned skull with its eyes gone to pits. The crescent moon hung behind them both, thin as a blade. Maud did not run. She lifted the rope in her hands and rang the bell once, low, the note that meant come home, and the wolf lowered its head, and for the first time in her life she understood that the sound had never been calling the dead. It had been calling whatever was left of the dead to answer it.
