Snarling wolves and bear in a circle

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black and grey drawing of three snarling animal heads, two resembling wolves and one resembling a bear, overlapping within a solid black circle. Peony-style flowers, leaves, rosebuds and two bees fill the spaces around the animals. The fine stippled linework and shading give the animals fur texture, and the composition is centred on a plain white background.

Maud Pellow had counted the bees twice before she said anything to her father, because bees did not belong on Skerry Lamb in October. They came up the stairs of the lantern room on the salt wind, clumsy and fat, and settled on the brass rail where the peonies from the mainland had been pressed flat in a book since spring. Her father swatted at them with his cap and said they were drowned bees, sent back by the tide, and that a dying thing should be left alone.

The fog came in on the Thursday with three animals inside it. Maud saw the bear first, a grey shape the size of a cart, lifting its head above the rocks where the old landing steps used to be. Behind it two wolves paced the wet shingle, lips drawn back over teeth the colour of candle wax. They did not come up the path. They stood at the water's edge and snarled at the sea, at the black swell that had taken the Harrow boy and his lobster pots the winter before.

Her father went down with the lamp and a coil of rope, meaning to bring them up or drive them off. Maud stayed at the glass and kept the light turning, because that was the job, and because she could see from above what he could not from the shingle. The wolves were not facing the sea at all. They were facing each other, and the bear stood between them with its jaws open, roaring at the place where the water folded over the Harrow boy's boat.

When the fog lifted at dawn the shingle was empty except for two bees, asleep on a rosebud and warm in the sun. Her father came up the stairs without the rope and sat down heavily beside her. "They weren't ours to fetch," he said, and reached for the teapot. Maud kept the light turning until noon, the way she always did, and did not tell him she had seen the wolves turn their heads toward the lighthouse before they went.
