UFO and clouds in a diamond on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-shaped panel shows a flying saucer with a lit underside above a pointed rocket-like object, with stippled clouds and four-point stars around it. The shading is built from fine dots that grade from dense grey to pale areas, and a cluster of pointed shapes fills the lower left corner. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the inner forearm against a plain light background.

Dear Prior Anselm, you asked me to stop writing about the weather and I have tried, but the weather is what I have been watching since Tuesday, when the clouds over the lower meadow began stacking themselves into shelves like the choir stalls in the cold chapel. Brother Osric swears they were sheep that wandered up. I have counted the sheep. There are eleven and they are all in the byre.

On the Thursday night, after Compline, I went up to the bell tower with the old brass telescope from the cellarer's room. The sky was clear as a washed bowl. Between the two bright stars over the mill, something sat still and wide, a saucer with lamps round its rim, lit from below the way a lantern lights a ceiling. It did not blink. It was not a bird, I am certain of that, and it was not Brother Osric's kite, which he flew badly in October and has never mentioned since.
Then, out past the orchard wall, a thin white shape rose straight up from the valley road, slow at first and then not slow at all, like a candle drawn upward by a string. Its trail ran straight and pale, and for a moment the stars above the saucer looked as though they were being dusted with flour. I wrote down the minute. I did not ring the bell. I am not sure whom it would have warned.
I am sending this with the carter so that it reaches you before the Bishop's visitation. If he asks, tell him the brothers are keeping vigil over the clouds, which is true enough. I have not yet decided whether to tell him about the rest. I think the saucer was looking at the abbey, and I think it was polite about it.
