Howling wolf head in brown, red and yellow tones
Other · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head in profile is shown with its muzzle raised and eyes closed, as if howling. The linework is soft and feathered, and the fur is built from blended black shading with brown, red and ochre tones. A partial dark pattern is visible at the bottom edge of the frame, and fabric sits at the top right.

By the third night the snow had swallowed the lower panes of the Gull and Lantern, and Mrs Ogle had stopped pretending the coach road would open before Thursday. You kept the parlour fire fed with split ash while the carter played patience badly at the long table and the two schoolmasters argued over a dead Latin poet. Nobody remarked on the dog, which had not stopped whining at the back door since supper.

When you finally lifted the latch, the cold took your breath clean out of you. The yard was white to the wall tops, blue under the lantern, and on the ridge above the mill stood a wolf with its muzzle lifted to the moon. Its eyes were shut, as if the song had to be felt through its chest rather than seen. Where the light caught its coat the fur burned rust and ochre, like bracken in a fire that had not yet decided to spread. You had been told wolves were gone from these hills a hundred years. You stood on the step with the door open behind you and let the note run down your spine until your hands ached.
It stopped as abruptly as it had begun. The wolf lowered its head and looked down at you across the drifts, then turned and trotted along the mill race, pressing a path in the snow that you saw in the morning ran straight to the place where the carter had lost his horses. Out on the road, far beyond the last drift, a lantern was swinging slowly from side to side, and somebody was calling back.
