Howling wolf and moon on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf with its head tilted back and mouth open in a howl fills the frame, with a large moon and soft clouds behind it. The fur is built from fine, feathered black and grey strokes, with heavy shadow along the jaw and neck and lighter tones on the moon. The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, shown against plain skin with a chain visible at the top edge.

Put the kettle on, love, and mind the step, for the tar gives out just past the cattle grid and nobody who drives this road at night ever hears the end of a story they've left half told. My grandmother told me this one sitting on a crate of oranges by the petrol pump, and she swore every word was true, which she said of everything.

There was a grey wolf called Mab who ran with a pack of eleven across the flats below the ridge. One dry year the water holes shrank to mud, and the pack went down into the salt where the ground stayed cool at night. Mab stayed up on the ridge with a split paw that would not close. She sat at the edge of the road with the wind combing her ruff and howled at the moon, which hung over the ridge like a coin somebody had dropped and forgotten. Clouds slid across its face, thin as wet wool, and she howled through them until her voice was as rough as a gravel track.

A lorry driver called Harold Mott pulled in with a cracked radiator and heard her. He sat in his cab with the window down, and after a while he heard eleven answers rising out of the flats, faint as a wireless playing in another room. The moon heard them too. It leaned down low to see who was calling, and where its light touched the salt the pack found the path back, one wolf after another, nose to tail, up onto the ridge where Mab sat waiting with her paw held high.

She never got her old voice back. The moon had kept a little of it, so when she sang at night it came out ragged and strange, and that is why, my grandmother said, you still hear wolves on these roads and feel the hair lift on your arms. Turn off your engine now and listen past the cattle grid. Someone out there is still answering.
