Hummingbird and flowers on the top of a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A hummingbird in rainbow shades of pink, orange, green and blue hovers beside pink and orange flowers, with small black music notes above them. The wings and body have soft shading and blended colour, and the flowers fade into the skin at their edges. The tattoo sits across the top of a bare foot with painted black toenails, set against a dark, glossy background.

Nine floors up in Hadley House, the window boxes had been dead since March, and Ruth Okafor had stopped pretending otherwise. Then, on the second Saturday of June, something that flashed green, blue and orange hung in the air outside her kitchen glass, its beak level with a single pink bloom Kwame had bought from the market for a pound and forgotten to water.

Kwame was eleven and had been sent up to mind her while his mum worked a double at the care home. He thought the thing was a trick of the light off the car park. He pressed his face to the glass, and the bird folded its wings and stayed put, feeding from the flower's throat as if it had paid for a seat.
His dad had left a tin whistle in the drawer under the cutlery, green at the mouth and dented along one side. Kwame blew the first three notes he could remember, badly. The bird lifted, turned and came straight back to the flower. He tried a rising phrase and it hovered closer, flicking its tail like a conductor's baton. Ruth, watching from her armchair, said that bird had been coming up from the canal every summer since her husband died, and that she had never once told anyone she left the flowers out for it.
By August the bloom had gone brown and the bird had moved on to the balconies below. Kwame still carried the pot out each morning and blew the three notes into the air. Some days nothing came. On the morning he stopped expecting it, a single pink petal was stuck to the glass where the bird had hung, pressed flat as a ticket.
