Cartoon blue bird on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon bird with a blue head and wings, a pink body and a yellow beak is tattooed on the top of a bare foot. The outlines are bold and black, with flat fills and simple highlights in a cartoon-style design. The bird sits off-centre on the foot against a dark plastic-covered surface, with the toes visible to the right.

Dear Peg,

I have finally caught the little bird that keeps pinching the Discovery apples off the top row. You will not believe what it is. Mr Halloran swears it is a blue tit gone soft in the head, but I have seen it close to, and it has a yellow beak like a bent pencil and a belly the colour of Mother's rhubarb fool. It perches on the ladder rung and looks at me sideways, as if I were the one who had been stealing.
We had three days of rain in August and the whole orchard smelt of windfalls. Wasps everywhere, sticky sweetness on the grass, and the pickers' boots squelching. Tom says the bird is nothing but trouble, but he laughed when it flew straight into the crate he had just stacked and sat there cheeping at him until he gave it a plum. I think it was the plum that did it. He has been feeding it every evening since, out of his good coat pocket, which Mam will skin him for if she finds out.
The bird has stopped stealing from the top row, mind. Now it only takes the ones he has put aside for the cider press, which Tom says is a fair exchange for the company. Yesterday it followed him all the way to the gate by the pear tree and sat on the post while he counted baskets, bold as a bailiff.
Come home for the picking if you can. Bring your good scissors and your stubbornness. The gate is still where he waits, and the bird still has the cheek to wink at me when I pass.
Love, Nell
