Rainbow unicorn on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A rearing cartoon unicorn with a white body, a rainbow-coloured mane and a multicoloured horn is tattooed on the upper arm. The outlines are dark and clean, with soft pastel shading on the legs and body and bright pink hooves. The design fills most of the frame, against a dark background.

Nobody on Gullwick Pier had seen a unicorn paint itself before, so when Mrs Tulliver found the carousel horse with the rainbow mane standing in the chip shop queue, she assumed the fog had got into her tea. Pink hooves clattered on the wet boards. The brass plate on his saddle said PEMBERTON, and he was staring at the fryer with the sort of longing usually reserved for ex-husbands.

Pemberton had not always been so bright. For forty years he had gone round in the same dull primer grey, until Dolores Frane bought the rides from her cousin and decided the carousel needed cheering up. She gave every animal a tin of paint and told them to make themselves interesting. The lions chose gold, the swans chose sensible white, and Pemberton, who had never once been asked his opinion, dipped his whole muzzle in the pink and then, for good measure, the lilac, the lemon and the sea green.
The trouble was that the paint had got into him. Every foggy night since, he had slipped his brass pole after closing time and gone clattering down the pier to stand at the end, rearing up against the grey as if he had a bone to pick with the sea. Mrs Tulliver had written to the council about it twice. The council had written back asking whether she had been drinking.
On the last night of October the fog lifted all at once and the whole pier turned gold under the lamps. Pemberton reared at the railing one final time. A boy with a bag of chips stood very still and watched a rainbow mane shake loose over the water, and the gulls, for once, had nothing to say about it.
