Unicorn head with rose on a foot

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A unicorn head in profile sits on the top of a foot, with a dark flowing mane and a pale horn. The outlines are bold and the mane and face are filled with grey shading. A small pink rose sits between the horn and the mane, providing the only colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grey beast came off the ferry at Durovernum standing in a cart, its legs roped, its mane hanging over its eyes like wet wool. Nobody in our town had seen a unicorn before, though my uncle swore the Greeks had written of them in books he could not read. The horn was pale as a peeled willow switch, and someone had already pinned a rose behind it, crushed and pink from the crossing.

My uncle Cerdic kept the stables behind the forum and paid me a bronze coin a week to muck out after dark. The dealer wanted a fortune for the animal, and Cerdic said he would be sold on to a governor's household by midsummer, so nobody would be surprised if it stopped eating before then. It stopped eating the first night. I could see its ribs through the grey, so I untied the rope and led it to the well, which was not stealing, only walking.

It drank for a long time. When it lifted its head the rose had slipped loose and was turning slowly in the water toward the drain. I fished it out with a hazel stick, shook it dry, and pushed it back between the horn and the mane where it had been. The beast leaned its whole weight into my shoulder, as if it had been waiting for someone to do that properly.

In the morning the dealer came with his purse and two men. I told him the beast had gone up the hill in the night. He never asked which hill. The rose stayed on it for days, browning at the edges, and I like to think it is still up there somewhere past the walls, a small pink flower on a grey head, grazing where no one is going to sell it.
