Dear Tom,

The bird came back again this morning, the green one I wrote about. It hung over the honeysuckle by the gate at the edge of Calder Wood the way a thought hangs over a person before they say it, wings so quick they went blurry and then stopped dead, as if someone had pinned it in the air. Mrs Pryce from the shop says it must have blown across on the wind from somewhere warm, and the vicar says it means nothing much, but Ruth's boys have been out with a jam jar every afternoon since Tuesday and have not caught a single feather.
Its throat is the colour of a rust-stained kettle, and when the light comes low through the beeches the green on its back turns almost to brass. I went down with the sugar water your grandfather used to mix for the wasps. I held the saucer on my palm like a fool and stood very still, which at my age is no small thing, and the bird came straight at my knuckles, looked me over with one black eye, and then went for the saucer as though it had an appointment.
I think it was waiting for someone to notice it was lost. Your grandfather always said the wood kept more secrets than the parish register. Perhaps it has kept a bird or two as well.
Come home at Easter if you can. Bring the boy. There is a saucer on the step and I will keep it filled until you do.
Love, Mum
