Her brother Teddy wanted the mirrors crated by morning and the sprung floor sold off by the yard. "Leave it," he said, scraping chairs. "It'll find the skylight on its own."

It didn't. Frances climbed the stepladder with a tea towel and cupped the bird, its heart ticking hard against her palm. Carrying it down through the bare tables, she passed the piano where, years ago, Teddy had prised loose a card wedged behind the keys. Their mother's neat hand had written remember me across it, and a date in 1938, and the name of a dancer who had sailed for New York with a bandleader and never written home again.

At the terrace doors she opened her fingers. The bird sat there a moment, then shot straight up over the railings, past the lamp posts and the dark shape of the pier, out towards the cliffs. Teddy came out behind her with two cups of tea, a crate balanced on his hip, and asked what she thought she was doing. "Letting something go," she said, tucking the card into her coat. "Somebody in this family should."
