Hummingbird tattoo on upper chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A hummingbird in flight is tattooed on the upper chest, with its long beak, outstretched wings and tail feathers rendered in detail. The bird is shaded in black and grey, using soft gradients on the body and fine marks on the wings to suggest feather texture. A quarter is placed beside the tattoo for scale, and a printed stencil of the bird sits on tape to the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The hall had emptied by half past eleven, and Dora was still on her knees beneath the piano, feeling along the boards for the quarter that had rolled out of Teddy's waistcoat during the last foxtrot. Her fingers found grit, a bent hairpin, a ticket stub from 1947, and at last the coin, warm from being carried all evening. Teddy had brought it back from a tour of the Carolinas, along with a story about a glass case in Charleston and a bird inside it no bigger than a thimble.

He came back for his trumpet case and found her sitting cross-legged on the stage with a pencil stub and the back of a set list. "Draw it for me," he said, leaning on the piano lid. "The one in the case. I can't get it out of my head." So she drew it in quick grey strokes: the needle of a beak, the head tipped forward as if listening, the wings blurred with fine marks where the feathers beat too fast to hold still, and the tail fanned out like a folded hand of cards.
"They can't glide," Teddy said, watching the lines go down. "Somebody told me that. They have to keep going or they drop."
"Then it's the most honest thing in the room," Dora said, and blew the pencil dust off the page. She pressed the drawing flat against the lid of the piano and tore the set list along its crease so the bird came away whole.
Teddy folded it twice and tucked it behind the coin in his pocket. When Dora switched off the last lamp, the light from the street came through the tall windows and laid a small dark shape across the empty floor, wings lifted, hanging in the air where nothing was holding it up.
