Bird in flight across upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic bird in flight is tattooed across the upper back, with both wings spread wide and the tail feathers extending down the centre of the design. The shading is smooth black and grey, with soft gradients on the body and sharp dark edges on the flight feathers that give the wings depth and texture. The bird fills most of the frame against plain skin, with a dark strap visible at the lower edge.

Dear Ruth,

The mockingbird was on the lighthouse rail again this morning, the grey one with the bent tail feather, and Mr Pellow swore it was the same bird that stole the bread off your saucer last summer. I told him birds don't keep count of who feeds them. He only shrugged and said that was what a man says when he's been too busy to look at anything properly, which is fair, given I've been up the tower every night since the Sandersons' boat didn't come in.
You'll want to know about the fog. It sat on the Sound from Thursday until Saturday so thick that Jim Carrow walked into the harbour wall twice. On Saturday evening I climbed to the gallery to light the lamp by hand and there was the bird, out over the water, wings spread wider than I'd ever seen on anything that small. It wasn't flying away from the rocks. It was circling the same patch of grey, low, dipping its long tail as though it were feeling for something underneath.
I rang the bell until my hands went numb. Nobody answered from the sea, but the bird kept at it, and about midnight a light came back at us from the east, then another, and then the Sandersons' trawler nosed out of the murk with its rails full of gulls. I don't know what the bird was. I only know I stopped counting the minutes once it had turned back toward the cliffs.
Write to me properly, and don't tell Mother about the boathouse.
Love, Anne
