Mrs Pellow from the lane came up to the gate and asked after you, and I said you were in Glasgow doing something with lights, which is more or less true.

I found your old knife in the shed, the one with the bone handle, wedged behind the sacks of bonemeal. I took it out and sat on the upturned crate where you used to sit and sulk about grafting. I thought about writing to you on the back of the seed catalogue, but the paper was too thin and the pencil kept going through.

What I want to say is that I tried to hate the place after you left, and I couldn't manage it. The trees don't care who is in them. Last Tuesday I climbed the old Discovery at the top of the slope, higher than I have dared in years, and I could see the sea sitting flat and silver past the church. For about a minute nothing was owed to anyone. I laughed out loud like a fool and a wood pigeon went up out of the hedge.

Come home at Christmas if you can. Bring the lights. I will keep the crate clear for you.

Love, Tess
