You asked how Stumpy is getting on at the depot, and the honest answer is that he has appointed himself night foreman. Every bus that pulls into Gresham Street gets inspected. He sits by the gate with his one good foreleg tucked under him and watches the drivers climb down. If one of them skips the mug of tea Mrs Okafor leaves out for them, he follows him to the bay and barks until it's fetched.

Last Thursday the rain came down so hard the gutters over Kingsway were running like weirs, and the late 43 limped in with a cracked windscreen and a driver nobody had seen before. He was soaked and shaking, clutching a carrier bag with a sandwich and a child's school shoe inside. Stumpy didn't bark at him. He crossed the wet tarmac on his three legs, sniffed the bag, then sat squarely on the man's boots and would not budge until someone rang the night desk.

I told the lad from the council that a dog that size shouldn't be out after dark. He told me to mind my own business, then handed me a digestive to give the dog. Stumpy took it, gave me a look as if I'd been foolish, and trotted back to his post by the gate.

The new sign went up on Monday, painted by Ravi from the workshop: I'M WITH STUMPY, in black capitals across the board above the timetable. Nobody has asked what it means. Everybody already knows.

Write soon, and tell Dad the vet's bill has finally been paid.
