Lettering and pointing hand on a calf

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a black ink tattoo on a person's lower leg, showing the words I'M WITH STUMPY in bold capitals above a solid black pointing hand with the index finger extended. The lettering is crisp and blocky with solid fills, and the hand is shaded in simple black and grey. The tattoo sits centre right against a plain maroon wall, with a prosthetic leg visible on the left of the frame.

Dear Ivy, you will not believe what Uncle Roy did during the speeches. Half the marquee was still sober when he stood up with a cardboard sign he had painted himself, the letters running uphill like they were late for a train. I'M WITH STUMPY, it said, and beneath it a fist with one finger stuck out, pointing straight at the bride's mother.

Stumpy, for anyone who missed the Hastings years, was the one-eared tabby who lived under the pier and stole chips from every pram on the front. Roy named him, Roy fed him, and when Stumpy died in the winter of the flood, Roy buried him in the allotment beside the leeks and never once said a word about it. So when the vicar asked if anyone objected, Roy raised his sign and the whole tent went quiet, and I thought, here we go.

But then the bride laughed. She actually laughed, the big unembarrassed laugh she had at the rehearsal, and she walked over, took the sign from him and read it out loud. Then she turned it round and pointed it at her new husband, who had apparently been the one feeding Stumpy in secret all those years after Roy stopped going down the pier.

Nobody had known. Roy looked like someone had handed him back a lost pair of spectacles. I am writing this at the kitchen table with my shoes off and the sign propped against the teapot, and I have decided it stays there. Love, Maud.
