Ankh and Eye of Horus on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's neck, with a small tattoo of an ankh placed directly above an Eye of Horus. Both symbols are drawn in solid black ink with even, thin linework and no shading. The soft, dark background and the hands on the head and shoulder frame the tattoo at the centre of the composition.

The ewe had gone down in the slush beside the top gate, and Ruth was on her knees in it before she thought to lift the lantern. The lamb had come backwards and lay in the straw like a wet glove. She cleared its nose with two fingers, rubbed it hard with a fistful of sacking, and counted the seconds the way her father had taught her, under her breath, until she reached forty and gave up on forty.

Uncle Teddy's tin sat on the dresser at home, with its bent lid and its smell of camphor. Inside, folded in a Cairo newspaper from 1942, were two pieces of pale metal: a loop on a stick, and an eye with a curled line beneath it. He had said they kept the weather off. He had come back from the desert with little else worth keeping, and he had never once explained them. Ruth had always thought he simply liked the look of them.

She pressed her mouth to the lamb's face and breathed into it, once, twice, a third time, until it shuddered and sneezed a fine spray of milk onto her cheek. Somewhere behind her the ewe lay still under the snow, and there was nothing to be done for her now but the ledger, which would need a line in the morning.

She carried the lamb inside under her coat and set it by the stove on a folded towel. Then she fetched the tin, took out the two small pieces of metal, and stood them side by side on the sill above the sink, where the lamp could reach them. The lamb wobbled to its feet beside the range. Outside, the snow kept falling on the gate, and nobody came to ask her about the ewe.
