Swallow tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and lower leg step along a steel rail, with the ankle and top of the foot visible. A small black swallow in thin, delicate linework sits across the ankle and foot, with its wings spread and tail forked. The shallow depth of field blurs the pale sky, railway sleepers and distant trees, keeping the focus on the tattoo.

Harold Pryce had worked the Coldharbour box for nineteen years and had never once been asked to stop a train for a bird. The swallows came in April, two of them, and built their cup of mud on the ledge above the lever frame, where the warm air rose from the stove. By June there were four chicks crowding the rim, and Harold had stopped sweeping the floor beneath them.

The letter from the area office arrived on a Tuesday. The branch would close at the end of August, the track would be lifted in September, and the box would be boarded up. Harold read it twice, then folded it into the tin where he kept spare fuses. He did not tell the boy from the depot, who came on Thursdays with the tea and the timetable, that he meant to stay on the last day to watch the birds.
On the final Friday the chicks had gone, one by one, out over the empty sidings. Only the oldest swallow remained, perched on the lever handle as if it were waiting for a signal. Harold stood very still until it lifted, circled the box once, then dropped low across the rails towards the far embankment, skimming the sleepers the way the expresses used to.
He walked the line home that evening, counting sleepers out of habit. At the level crossing he saw the bird again, ahead of him, dipping over the rail as though the rail had been laid there for it alone. He did not follow. He let it go on ahead, and the line went quiet behind them both.
