Ice cream cone with lightning bolts

Black and grey · Flash

A simple black outline drawing of a waffle cone topped with two scoops of ice cream. Lightning bolts or speed lines sit above and beside the cone, and the word Brrr is written across the cone. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading, and the design is drawn on a plain white background.

The power went at ten to four, just as the second batch of rye was sitting in the proofer, and by the time you'd found the torch the whole street had gone dark except for the lightning walking across the hills behind the car park. You stood in the cold room with the door propped open and the ice cream you'd been keeping for Dev's birthday sweating in its tub, because the freezer had given up and nobody had told the storm it was supposed to be a summer one.

You took the waffle cones down from the shelf, the ones you had bought by mistake in bulk, and piped a thin batter into the iron on the gas ring. Each wafer came out lacy and brown. You scooped two rounds of vanilla onto each, then remembered the marker in your apron and wrote Brrr across the cone in the shaky capitals Dev used to make on cardboard signs when he was seven and the ice cream van was still the best thing in the world.

Outside, every few minutes the sky cracked white and drew three jagged strokes over the rooftops, and you copied them onto the steamed glass with your thumb, the way you did as kids, so the bolts sat above the scoops like a crown on a bad hat. By five the rain had thinned to drizzle and the tubs had turned to soup. You lined up twelve cones on a tray like soldiers.

At six the bread van driver knocked, soaked to the skin, and stared at the tray. Power's out, he said. You pushed one across the counter. He licked the top, shivered, and grinned. Brrr, he said. You told him it was far too early for that, and he said that was exactly why it was perfect.
